Okay. Now, let’s start!
♪ Topic 16: What do you think are the most important subjects in school? Day 2.
Let’s start by listening to this week’s dialogue.
At school, Vicky and Edison are talking about the subjects they think are important.

The word “essential” means “necessary,” “something that must be included.” In other words, it means “very important.”
Okay. So, here’s the question: Q2). Why does Edison think that science is important?
Why does Edison think that science is important? Moeno?
Because it develops our ability to understand the world.
Very nice. The question was: Why does Edison think that science is important? And the answer is: A2). Because it develops our ability to understand the world.
Because it develops our ability to understand the world. Great job.
Everyone, let’s practice saying the answer like this: Edison thinks that science is important because it develops our ability to understand the world. Great job.

-What would you say?
This week’s topic is:
What do you think are the most important subjects in school?
Today, let’s look at two ways to say which subjects you feel are most important.
In the dialogue, Vicky says: I’m drawn to Japanese.
“To be drawn to something” means “to be pulled toward something” or “to be attracted to something.”
Yeah. For example: I’m drawn to any manga that has favorite characters in it.
When Vicky says, “I’m drawn to Japanese,” this does not directly mean that Japanese is the most important subject.
But she and Edison are talking about the most important subjects. So, when Vicky says, “I’m drawn to Japanese,” she means that she’s pulled toward Japanese as the most important.
Right. It’s also possible to be drawn to a person.
Yeah. I’m drawn to people who are fun to be around.
Moeno, what kind of music are you drawn to?
I’m drawn to songs played in musical movies.
Ah, musicals. Ah, I see. Okay, everyone. Let’s try practicing using Vicky’s line. Ready?
I’m drawn to Japanese.
I’m drawn to Japanese. Fantastic.
Edison also uses another good expression. He says: Without a doubt, science is essential.
Without a doubt, science is essential.
“A doubt” is a feeling of not being sure or of not believing something completely. So, “without a doubt” means “with no doubt at all.”
When you’re very sure of something, you can say “without a doubt.” For example: Sandy, how have you enjoyed being on this show?
