Japan comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto to drop suit against publisher over sex scandal report

TOKYO — Japanese comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto is set to drop a defamation suit against a publisher over a sex scandal report in a weekly magazine, sources close to the matter have revealed to the Mainichi Shimbun.
Matsumoto, a member of comedian duo Downtown, filed a 550 million yen (approx. $3.60 million) suit seeking damages for defamation from Bungeishunju Ltd. over a report in its weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun on his alleged sexual acts with women. Matsumoto also demanded the company publish an apology.
From December 2023 onward, Shukan Bunshun had reported on accusations by two women who said they had had drinking and dining sessions at a hotel with Matsumoto and others in 2015. In the article, the women were quoted as claiming that they engaged in nonconsensual sexual acts with Matsumoto.
In January 2024, Matsumoto filed a suit with the Tokyo District Court, arguing that there were no sexual acts as described in the article, nor any coercion to perform such acts. He accordingly claimed there was nothing that would constitute sexual assault. The suit also asserted that the article was based on extremely sloppy news-gathering activities, covering only one-sided comments by the women without objective evidence.
During the first oral proceedings of the trial in March this year, the publisher demanded that the court dismiss the suit, saying, “We had a number of interviews with the two women and carefully examined the concreteness of their testimonies and evidence to support them. The article reported the truth.”

東京–お笑いタレントの松本人志が、週刊誌のセックス・スキャンダル報道をめぐる出版社に対する名誉毀損訴訟を取り下げようとしていることが、関係筋の話として毎日新聞の取材で明らかになった。
お笑いコンビ「ダウンタウン」の松本人志は、週刊誌「週刊文春」の女性との性行為疑惑報道をめぐり、文藝春秋社を相手取り、名誉毀損による損害賠償を求めて5億5000万円の訴訟を起こしていた。松本はまた、同社に謝罪文の掲載を要求した。
週刊文春」は2023年12月以降、2015年に松本氏らとホテルで飲み食いしたという女性2人の告発を報じていた。記事の中で、女性たちは松本と合意のない性行為に及んだと主張していた。
2024年1月、松本は東京地裁に提訴し、記事にあるような性行為はなかったし、性行為の強要もなかったと主張した。従って、性的暴行に該当するものはなかったと主張した。また、記事は客観的な証拠もなく、女性側の一方的なコメントのみを取り上げた、極めてずさんな取材活動に基づくものであるとも主張した。
今年3月の裁判の第1回口頭弁論で、出版社側は裁判所に訴えの棄却を求め、「2人の女性に何度も取材し、証言の具体性とそれを裏付ける証拠を慎重に検討した。記事は真実を報道した。」
