December 29th came. It was the day for Lupin and Ganimard’s meeting. Ganimard arrived again at the old house where everything had begun. Lupin spoke first.
“Do you have the scarf?”
“Yes, half of it.”
“Let’s compare.”
They spread the two scarf pieces on the table. They fit perfectly.
“Ganimard, you want to see if there are bloody fingerprints on my scarf, don’t you?”
Lupin held his piece against a window, and Ganimard made a happy sound.
“Yes, you can clearly see all five fingerprints.”
“As you can see, Ganimard, it’s his left hand. That is why I knew he was left-handed.”
Ganimard quickly took the scarf and put it in his pocket.
“May I see your piece?”
Lupin checked the tassels at the end of the red silk scarf.
“Do you remember what the singer’s servant told you? I believe she said that the singer was very good at sewing. I got curious and opened one of the tassels of the scarf in your pocket. Inside, there was a medal to bring her good luck. Cute, isn’t it? So it made me think. She must have hidden something important in the other half as well.”
“Something important?”
“Yes. A-ha!”
At that moment, Lupin took out a shining blue stone from one of the tassels. It was the sapphire.
“This is why I asked you to bring it to me.”
“You thief! Give it back!”
Lupin gave back the red scarf but kept the sapphire.
“I will be keeping this. Didn’t I give you clues to solve this case, and didn’t you follow them like a dog? Now, be a good dog and go home with the bloody scarf you need to arrest the killer. What do you think?”
Ganimard became very angry and pointed his gun at Lupin.
“This is what I think! Hands up, Lupin!”
“I wouldn’t use that if I were you. Your housekeeper, Old Catherine, is my friend. I asked her to put water in your gun this morning.”
Ganimard was shocked. He put the gun in his pocket and suddenly ran toward Lupin. Then Ganimard remembered all the times Lupin had defeated him, and stopped.
“Wise choice.”
But as Lupin moved toward the door, Ganimard automatically tried to stop him. In return, Lupin knocked Ganimard down with his head. Lupin ran away laughing.
Twenty minutes later, Ganimard was given a letter from one of his men. It said,
“You trust people too much. If someone tells you that your gun is wet, you should not believe him and pull the trigger. Even if it’s me. If you had, you would have found out these two things. One, that your gun was not wet. Two, that your servant is honest and loyal to you only.
Sincerely your friend, Arsène Lupin”

12月29日がやってきた。ルパンとガニマールが会う日だった。ガニマールは、すべてが始まった古い家に再びやって来た。ルパンが先に話しかけた。
「スカーフは持っているか？」
「はい、半分です。」
「比べてみましょう。」
彼らは2枚のスカーフをテーブルの上に広げた。ぴったりとフィットした。
「ガニマール、私のスカーフに血のついた指紋がついているかどうか見たいでしょう？」
ルパンは自分のスカーフを窓にかざすと、ガニマールは嬉しそうな声を上げた。
「はい、5つの指紋がはっきり見えます。」
「ご覧のとおり、ガニマール、それは彼の左手です。だから私は彼が左利きだと分かったのです。」
ガニマールは素早くスカーフを取り、ポケットに入れた。
「あなたのスカーフを見せていただけますか？」
ルパンは赤いシルクのスカーフの端の房を確認した。
「歌手の召使が言ったことを覚えていますか？確か、あの歌手は裁縫が上手だったって言ってたよ。気になって、君のポケットのマフラーの房の1つを開けてみた。中には、幸運を呼ぶメダルが入ってた。かわいいでしょ？それで考えてみたんだ。もう片方にも何か大事なものを隠してあるに違いない」
「大事なもの？」
「そう、なるほど！」
その時、ルパンは房の1つから青く光る石を取り出した。それはサファイアだった。
「だから持ってきてくれって言ったんだよ」
「この泥棒！返せ！」
ルパンは赤いマフラーを返したが、サファイアは取っておいた。
「これは取っておくよ。事件を解決する手がかりを君に与えただろう、そして君は犬のようにそれを追いかけたじゃないか。さあ、いい子にして、殺人犯を逮捕するために必要な血まみれのマフラーを持って家に帰れ」どう思う？」
ガニマールは激怒し、ルパンに銃を向けた。
「これが私の考えだ！ ルパン、手を上げろ！」
「私が君だったら、そんなものは使わない。君の家政婦の老キャサリンは私の友人だ。今朝、彼女に君の銃に水を入れるよう頼んだ。」
ガニマールはショックを受けた。彼は銃をポケットに入れ、突然ルパンに向かって走った。するとガニマールは、ルパンが自分を負かしたすべての時を思い出し、立ち止まった。
「賢明な選択だ。」
しかし、ルパンがドアに向かって動くと、ガニマールは自動的に彼を止めようとした。その見返りに、ルパンはガニマールを頭で殴り倒した。ルパンは笑いながら逃げていった。
20分後、ガニマールは部下の一人から手紙を受け取った。そこにはこう書かれていた。「君は人を信用しすぎている。誰かが君の銃が濡れていると言ったら、信じて引き金を引いてはいけない。たとえそれが私であっても。もし君がそうしていたら、この2つのことに気付いていただろう。」一つは、あなたの銃が濡れていなかったこと。二つは、あなたの召使があなたにだけ誠実で忠実であったこと。
