このコーナーでは、英語のルールや単語など、毎回一つのトピックを取り上げて、詳しく見ていきます。
今回は、soの使い方について説明します。これ前のストーリーで、同じ そうという単語でもいくつかの異なる使い方がされていました。ここでは4つの使い方について確認しましょう。
1). 最初は「とても」という意味の so です。
very beautiful とても美しいや very fast とても速く、などのveryと同じ意味で使われます。例文です。
Makoto is very nice.
まことはとても優しいです。という意味です。

2). 次に、「それで、じゃあ」などの意味で、文の最初に置く So です。これはすでに出ている話題や話の流れを受けて使います。例文です。

それで、私たちは次に何をしましょうか」という意味です。
何かを、し終わった場面、などで使います。

3). 次は、日本語の「そう」という意味で、直前の内容を受けて、その代わりに使う soです。例文です。

ショータはとても親切な人です。
私もそう思います。
という意味です。この so は、ショータがとても親切な人だ、という内容を表しています。

4) 最後は、「だから」という意味のそうです。前の部分を受けて、 「だから〜」とその結果を表す際に使います。例文です。
It’s very cold today. So, I want to eat something hot.
今日はとても寒いので、私は何か熱いものを食べたいです。」という意味です。
この so は、2つの主語プラス動詞の部分を結びつける接続詞となっています。
