ミカは自分が打ったホームランボールを探しに、公園の外へ出ました。ミカがしばらくしても帰ってこないので、グレイが心配して見に行くと、ミカは木立の中にいました。

-Tell me more. ストーリーに出てきた単語やフレーズを1つ取り上げて、クリスとダイアナにその使い方を教えてもらいましょう。
今日取り上げるのは tree stumps 切り株です。木、tree や葉、leaf はよく知られていますよね。木は身近な存在なので、その色々な部分を使って言葉が作られています。
例えば、ストーリーに出てきた stump 切り株は、昔よく木の切り株に立ってスピーチをする習慣があったので、街頭演説のことをstump speech と言います。
他にも木の枝、branch は木の中心から枝分かれして広がっていくので、会社の支店という意味でも使われます。
木に関連する言葉には他に根、root や木の実、nut などがあります。こうした言葉からどんな表現が生まれているのか、ぜひ調べてみてください。

-Today’s key point. 今日の学習ポイントは今月の「できるようになること さまざまな表現で話してみよう」です。
そして今日のキーセンテンスはこちら。

私はボールを見つけることができました。
「〜することができます。できました。」や、〜する能力があります。ありました。という時には、be able to を動詞の前に置き、to の後の動詞は原形を使います。Be は主語や時に合わせて am, is, are, was, were に変えて使います。
それでは他の例文も見てみましょう。
1). Thanks to you, we were able to enjoy ourselves.
あなたのおかげで私たちは楽しむことができました。
主語が複数形で過去のことを言うときは were able to を使います。enjoy の後に oneself や ourselves を置くことで、楽しむ、楽しく過ごすという意味になります。
2). My sister’s baby is able to walk already.
私の姉の赤ちゃんはもう歩くことができます。
主語が3人称単数で現在のこと言う時は is able to を使います。次です。
3). Some of the students are able to speak both English and French.
生徒の中の何人かは英語とフランス語の両方を話すことができます。
主語の some of the students が複数なので are able to を使います。
both は両方という意味で、both English and French で英語とフランス語の両方ともという意味になります。
