BRICS announced on Monday that Indonesia, which is Southeast Asia’s largest population and economy, is formally joining the group as a full member. With nations such as Russia, India, and China already participating, the group is expanding with its first entry of a Southeast Asian country.
Brazil, which holds the bloc’s presidency in 2025, welcomed Indonesia’s membership, saying that the country shares support for the reform of global governance institutions and the deepening of cooperation in the Global South.
Indonesia’s foreign ministry stressed the significance, saying it reflects Indonesia’s increasing active role in global issues, as well as its commitment to strengthen multilateral cooperation for a more inclusive and equitable global order.
BRICS has recently expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. A number of Southeast Asian nations are also showing interest in joining the bloc.

BRICSは7日、東南アジア最大の人口と経済規模を誇るインドネシアが正式加盟すると発表した。ロシア、インド、中国といった国々がすでに参加しており、東南アジア諸国の初加盟でグループは拡大する。
2025年に議長国を務めるブラジルは、インドネシアの加盟を歓迎し、同国はグローバル・ガバナンス制度の改革と「南半球」における協力の深化を支持していると述べた。
インドネシア外務省はこの意義を強調し、世界的な問題に対するインドネシアの積極的な役割の増大と、より包括的で公平な世界秩序のための多国間協力の強化へのコミットメントを反映したものだと述べた。
BRICSは最近、イラン、エジプト、エチオピア、アラブ首長国連邦を含むまでに拡大した。多くの東南アジア諸国もBRICSへの加盟に関心を示している。
