The Los Angeles area is bracing for possible setbacks in the fight to contain massive, deadly wildfires that have been burning for almost a week.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass held a news conference Monday.
The mayor said The National Weather Service is predicting close to hurricane-force level winds and that the city is making urgent preparations.
She added that her top priority and the priority of everyone else is to do everything possible to protect lives.
Santa Ana winds are common in Southern California during cooler months, but the fear is their speed and the dry air could make the already dangerous situation even worse.
Strong winds are forecast to stick around through Wednesday.
Authorities are also keeping an eye out for those looking to take advantage of the situation. Dozens of people have reportedly been arrested, including for looting.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said that any criminals who decided to take advantage of the situation would be arrested, prosecuted and punished to the full extent of the law.
On Sunday, volunteers at a donation center in Arcadia sorted items that recently arrived.
One volunteer said he was eager to help as he could become the next victim.
Officials say the disaster has killed at least 24 people. The number of buildings damaged or destroyed exceeds 12,000.
