Survivors, dignitaries mark 80th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation

Holocaust survivors and world dignitaries will attend a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz in Poland.
Participants at Monday’s ceremony will include survivors of the camp, their families and representatives from about 50 countries.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, French President Emmanuel Macron and King Charles of the United Kingdom are among the dignitaries.
The German Nazi concentration and extermination camp in southern Poland was liberated by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945.
About 1.1 million people were killed in gas chambers or died from starvation and diseases at the camp. Of them, some one million were Jews.
Ahead of the ceremony, a commemorative event was held in front of the Death Wall, where prisoners were fatally shot.
Eighty years after Auschwitz’s liberation, the average age of Holocaust survivors has reached 86.
The museum that manages the site says the milestone ceremony is likely to be the last attended by survivors.

月曜日の式典には、収容所の生存者とその家族、そして約50カ国の代表者が参加する。
ドイツのフランク＝ヴァルター・シュタインマイヤー大統領、フランスのエマニュエル・マクロン大統領、イギリスのチャールズ国王も要人の一人である。
ポーランド南部のドイツ・ナチス強制絶滅収容所は、1945年1月27日にソ連軍によって解放された。
収容所では約110万人がガス室で殺され、あるいは餓死や病死した。そのうちの約100万人がユダヤ人であった。
式典に先立ち、囚人たちが致命的に撃たれた「死の壁」の前で記念行事が行われた。
アウシュビッツ解放から80年、ホロコースト生存者の平均年齢は86歳に達した。
アウシュビッツを管理する博物館によれば、この節目の式典が、生存者が出席する最後の式典になる可能性が高いという。
