Apples stored under snow to boost sweetness dug out in Aomori

People have gathered in Japan’s northeastern prefecture of Aomori to dig out apples stored in snow and taste the fruit.
About 30 people, including tourists, took part in the annual event on Wednesday. Aomori City’s fruit company and others organized the gathering in a highland area at an elevation of about 750 meters in the Hakkoda mountain range.
Heavy machinery was used to break up more than four meters of accumulated snow.
Participants then used shovels to remove the snow surrounding wooden crates containing 30,000 bright red Sun Fuji apples.
The apples had been stored under the snow for about two months, where the temperature and humidity remain constant. These conditions make the fruit sweeter.
The participants enjoyed tasting this special winter treat.
One woman in her 20s from Nara Prefecture, western Japan, said she felt like the apples are sweeter than the ones she usually eats. She said they are so fresh and delicious.
The apples will hit supermarket shelves across the country starting on Thursday.

日本北東部の青森県では、雪の下に保存されたリンゴを掘り出し、その果実を味わうために人々が集まりました。
観光客を含む約30人が、水曜日に開催された年次イベントに参加しました。青森市の果物会社などが、八甲田山脈の標高約750メートルの高地でこの集いを企画しました。
重機を使用して、積もった4メートル以上の雪を壊し、その後、参加者はシャベルを使って、30,000個の鮮やかな赤色の「サンフジ」リンゴが入った木箱の周りの雪を取り除きました。
これらのリンゴは、約2か月間雪の下に保存され、温度と湿度が一定に保たれる条件下で、果実の甘さを増す効果がありました。
参加者は、この特別な冬のご馳走を味わいながら楽しみました。
奈良県（西日本）の20代の女性は、普段食べるリンゴよりも、これらのリンゴの方が甘いと感じ、非常に新鮮で美味しいと話しました。
そして、これらのリンゴは木曜日から、全国のスーパーマーケットの棚に並び始める予定です。
