Indonesia joins BRICS
Indonesia is also forming a closer relationship with some other big players in the region. It’s become the first Southeast Asian country to have full membership in the BRICS economic group, which includes Russia, India, and China.
Brazil holds BRICS presidency this year. It welcomed Indonesia as a nation that shares support for reforming global governance and contributes to deepening cooperation in the Global South.
Indonesia’s foreign ministry says joining BRICS shows it takes an active role in global issues and is committed to realizing a more inclusive and equitable global order.
A number of other Southeast Asian nations have also shown interest in joining BRICS. The bloc has already expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
