Japanese university to open the nation’s 1st faculty of dinosaur studies

A university located in a central Japanese prefecture known for numerous dinosaur fossil finds is set to open the nation’s first faculty dedicated to dinosaur studies.
Fukui Prefectural University will launch the Faculty of Dinosaur Paleontology in April, when the 2025 academic year starts. Students will do excavation field work and use cutting-edge digital technologies to unravel the mysteries around dinosaurs. The university says about 80 percent of dinosaur fossils unearthed in Japan have been found in the prefecture.
On Thursday, 19 students who will enroll had an opportunity to do some research work at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, ahead of the opening of the faculty.
They took 3-D scans of fossils to generate data. They also used virtual reality technology to recreate the skeleton of a dinosaur based on data collected from the fossils.
A student from Tokyo said the use of VR in fossil research turned out to be more difficult than she had anticipated. But she said she will enjoy doing studies on dinosaurs, as that is what she has always wanted to do.
A student from Fukui Prefecture said she will study hard for the next four years. She added that she believes learning about dinosaurs is good for research purposes and can also help the tourism industry.

日本の大学、国内初の恐竜学部を開設へ

多数の恐竜化石が発見されている日本の中央部に位置する県にある大学が、国内初の恐竜学に特化した学部を開設する予定だ。
福井県立大学は、2025年度の開始に合わせて、4月に「恐竜古生物学部」を設立する。学生たちは発掘作業や最先端のデジタル技術を駆使して、恐竜に関する謎を解明することになる。大学によると、日本で発掘された恐竜化石の約80％が福井県で見つかっているという。
木曜日には、新学部に入学予定の19人の学生が、福井県立恐竜博物館で研究作業を体験した。
学生たちは、化石の3Dスキャンを行い、データを生成した。また、仮想現実（VR）技術を活用し、化石から収集したデータを基に恐竜の骨格を再現する作業にも取り組んだ。
東京都からの学生は、VRを使った化石研究が想像以上に難しかったと話したが、長年の夢だった恐竜研究を楽しみながら取り組みたいと語った。
福井県出身の学生は、「これからの4年間、一生懸命勉強します」と意気込んだ。さらに、「恐竜について学ぶことは研究だけでなく、観光産業にも役立つと信じています」と述べた。
