Long and complicated. So this is one of those sentences where the proper nouns, the names of countries and groups, for example, can kind of get in the way when you’re trying to understand the sentence.
国名、固有名詞
So sometimes if you feel lost, it’s good to start by ignoring the proper nouns completely.
Naomi:
わからなくなっちゃったら一度固有名詞を無視しちゃってもいいんじゃないっていうことですかね。
Tom:
Right, right. So if you take them out, you get this. The conflicts have hampered efforts to provide it, or the Assad regime, with military support.
Naomi:
あー、確かに固有名詞抜くとだいぶシンプルになりましたね。 これを訳すと、 紛争がそれつまりアサド政権に軍事支援を提供する試みを妨害したっていうことになりますかね。
Maeshima:
そうですよね。これは本当に文の構造の骨組み skelton スケルトンを考えるといいということなんですよね。

OK, so with that, we know what’s basically going on. Once you have that, you can add in the proper nouns again by asking yourself questions.
