MUFG Bank employee accused of raiding safe deposit boxes
An investigation is underway in Japan over the theft of customer assets worth more than 6.5 million dollars from MUFG Bank branch offices by a female employee in her 40s. On Monday afternoon, the bank’s president and CEO explained what happened.

MUFG Bank announces ‘malfeasance’ by an employee
MUFJ Bank on November 22 revealed that a “front-line employee” who worked at its Nerima and Tamagawa branch offices in Tokyo had been opening customers’ safe deposit boxes without permission for 4.5 years and stole money and goods worth between 1-2 billion yen (market value).
The bank says the employee was responsible for managing the boxes and “took advantage” of the position.
The employee opened deposit boxes using the customers’ spare keys.
Two keys are required to access deposit boxes: the customer’s key and the bank’s key. In addition, spare customer keys were kept at the branches in case customers lost theirs. The employee was in charge of managing these spare keys.
The bank dismissed the employee on disciplinary grounds last month.
Noting there were flaws in its key management methods, the bank says it plans to change the system so the keys are managed at the bank’s headquarters.

MUFG銀行、行員による「不正行為」を発表
三菱UFJ銀行は11月22日、東京の練馬支店と玉川支店に勤務する「第一線の行員」が4年半にわたって顧客の貸金庫を勝手に開け、10億～20億円（時価）の金品を盗んでいたことを明らかにした。
同行によると、この従業員は貸金庫の管理責任者であり、その立場を「利用していた」という。
従業員は顧客のスペアキーを使って預金箱を開けた。
預金箱にアクセスするには、顧客の鍵と銀行の鍵の2つが必要である。さらに、顧客が自分の鍵を紛失した場合に備えて、支店には顧客のスペアキーが保管されていた。この従業員はこれらのスペア・キーの管理を担当していた。
銀行は先月、この従業員を懲戒解雇した。
鍵の管理方法に不備があったとして、同行は今後、鍵を銀行本部で管理するようシステムを変更する予定だという。
