Car rams into Christmas market in eastern Germany, killing 5
Five people have been confirmed dead and more than 200 others injured in eastern Germany after a driver rammed his vehicle into a crowded Christmas market.

The incident occurred on Friday in the city of Magdeburg.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the site on Saturday. He reported the number of casualties, saying almost 40 of the victims were seriously injured. He expressed concerns about them.
Scholz described the incident as a dreadful tragedy. He promised a thorough investigation to clarify the motive and to come up with a response based on the law. He called for unity with the bereaved families and injured people.
Police say they detained a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia at the scene. They allege the suspect intentionally drove his car into the crowd and that he was acting on his own.
Local authorities say the man is a doctor and has been in Germany since 2006.
Local media say the suspect had shared social media posts online focusing on anti-Islam themes. The media also say he had helped Saudi women who were seeking asylum abroad and introduced Germany’s refugee system online for many years.
In 2016, a truck drove into a Christmas market in Berlin. The terror attack left 12 people dead.
