Seeing a loved one with dementia can be painful. Confidence gives way to confusion. And they sometimes forget the impossible: basic tasks. Even the name of a child or spouse. But many sufferers become more than lost psychologically.
愛する人が認知症になるのはつらいことだ。自信は混乱に変わる。そして、基本的な仕事という不可能なことを忘れてしまうこともある。子供や配偶者の名前さえも。しかし、多くの罹患者は、心理的な迷い以上のものを抱えている。
Last year, over 19,000 people diagnosed or showing signs of dementia in Japan went missing. The figure is a record. About 500 were discovered dead. 250 still had not been found.
Arakawa Tsutomu is from Yonago City in Tottori Prefecture, Western Japan.
And he’s been looking for his wife Yasuko since August last year. She has early onset dementia.
Arakawa says that it’s really painful. He has been crying every night.
Surveillance cameras and other evidence suggests Yasuko headed to neighboring Shimane Prefecture on foot.
Arakawa informed the police the day she disappeared. They dispatched a search team, and local authorities urged residents to keep an eye out.
But Arakawa says that’s about all they did.
Authorities in Tottori share information about missing dementia sufferers with every municipality and those in neighboring prefectures.
The catch? They must be aged 65 or older.
And Yasuko vanished aged 59.
He says he doesn’t want to part with his wife that way. Because he has been with her for long time.
Authorities in Tottori finally told their counterparts in Shimane about Yasuko a month later.
Arakawa belongs to a group of dementia patients and their families. They submitted a petition to the central government on December.

荒川勉は鳥取県米子市出身である。
昨年8月から妻の靖子さんを探している。彼女は初期の認知症である。
荒川は「本当につらい」と言う。毎晩泣き続けている。
監視カメラやその他の証拠から、靖子は徒歩で隣県の島根県に向かったと思われる。
荒川は失踪当日に警察に通報した。警察は捜索チームを派遣し、地元当局は住民に目を光らせるよう促した。
しかし、荒川によれば、警察がしたことはそれだけだったという。
鳥取県当局は、行方不明の認知症患者に関する情報を各自治体や近隣県の自治体と共有している。

靖子は59歳で失踪した。

鳥取県警が島根県警に靖子のことを伝えたのは、それから1ヵ月後のことだった。
荒川は認知症患者とその家族のグループに属している。彼らは12月に国に嘆願書を提出した。
