China launches new amphibious assault ship
China has launched a new amphibious assault ship designed to improve the country’s long-range operational capabilities.
中国は、長距離作戦能力の向上を目的とした新型水陸両用強襲揚陸艦を進水させた。
The Sichuan was put into water at a ceremony in Shanghai on Friday.
The Chinese military says the vessel has a full-load displacement of over 40,000 tons and can carry helicopters and amphibious equipment. It is to be used to defend remote islands and landing operations.
The Sichuan also has an electromagnetic catapult and can carry fixed-wing aircraft.
China is building up its naval capability at a fast pace. The country’s navy last launched a new amphibious assault ship, the Hainan, three years ago.
Analysts say China is stepping up its military pressure on Taiwan. They add that the country also apparently intends to hold the Philippines in check amid their intensifying confrontations over sovereignty in the South China Sea.

中国は速いペースで海軍力を増強している。同国の海軍が最後に新型の水陸両用強襲揚陸艦「海南」を進水させたのは3年前だ。
アナリストによれば、中国は台湾に対する軍事的圧力を強めているという。また、南シナ海での主権をめぐる対立が激化するなか、フィリピンを牽制する意図もあるようだ。
