South Korea to investigate deadly plane crash with US authorities
The South Korean government says it plans to investigate Sunday’s deadly plane crash in the country’s southwest with US authorities. The crash killed 179 of the 181 people on board.
韓国政府は、同国南西部で日曜日に発生した航空機墜落事故について、米国当局とともに調査する予定であると発表した。墜落事故では、乗客181人のうち179人が死亡した。
The plane operated by South Korean low-cost carrier Jeju Air departed from Thailand’s capital Bangkok for Muan.
Officials of the transport ministry announced the plan at a news conference on Monday as investigators continued to examine the wreckage of the Boeing 737 jet at Muan International Airport.
The officials said they will carry out a joint investigation with the US National Transportation Safety Board to analyze the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder retrieved from the jet. Boeing is a US maker.
They said the flight data recorder was found partially damaged.
Yonhap News Agency quoted a South Korean investigation board member as saying that decoding the flight data recorder alone could take about a month, compared to a week without damage.
The NTSB says they are preparing an investigation with Boeing and the FAA, US Federal Aviation Administration. Boeing says the company is in contact with Jeju Air, and stands ready to support them.
The aircraft belly-landed, skidded off a runway, then crashed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames on Sunday morning. Only two crew members survived.
The media outlets say the plane touched down without landing gear deployed shortly after the pilot of the aircraft declared mayday.
The country’s media say the crash is the deadliest-ever aviation accident on the country’s soil.
A memorial has been set up at a gymnasium near the airport. Many people are paying respects to the victims there, including acting president and deputy prime minister Choi Sang-mok, the National Assembly speaker and other lawmakers.
A man whose daughter was on the plane said, “It was a horrible and shocking accident. I never imagined something like this could happen to my daughter. I just can’t believe it.”
Acting President Choi declared a seven-day period of national mourning through January 4 at an emergency meeting of relevant government officials on Sunday night.

韓国の格安航空会社チェジュ航空が運航していた飛行機は、タイの首都バンコクからムアンへ向けて出発した。
ムアン国際空港でボーイング737型機の残骸の調査が続く中、運輸省の関係者は月曜日の記者会見でこの計画を発表した。
関係者によれば、米国運輸安全委員会と合同で調査を行ない、機体から回収されたフライト・データ・レコーダーとコックピット・ボイス・レコーダーを分析するとのことである。ボーイングはアメリカのメーカーである。
フライト・データ・レコーダーは部分的に破損していたとのこと。
聯合ニュースは、韓国の調査委員会メンバーの言葉を引用し、フライト・データ・レコーダーの解読だけでも、損傷がなければ1週間かかるところ、1ヶ月はかかるだろうと述べた。
NTSBはボーイング社およびFAA（アメリカ連邦航空局）と共に調査を準備しているという。ボーイング社によれば、同社は済州航空と連絡を取り合っており、支援する用意があるという。
日朝、航空機は滑走路から外れて横滑りし、コンクリートバリアに衝突して炎上した。生存者は乗員2名のみ。
