Stranded Shinkansen bullet train back in operation in northern Japan
A Shinkansen bullet train that had been stranded for 12 hours in Akita Prefecture due to a power failure has resumed operation.
秋田県で停電のため12時間立ち往生していた新幹線が運転を再開した。
The East Japan Railway company says the Komachi No. 43 train was traveling from Tokyo to Akita Station.
The train stopped between the Kakunodate and Omagari stations in Akita Prefecture, when the power failed at about 10:35 p.m. on Sunday. There are no reports of health problems among people who were onboard at this time.
A power failure left 260 passengers on board a Shinkansen bullet train stranded for about four hours overnight in northern Japan. Heating and power sources in the cars were also knocked out.
JR East has transported all the passengers to Omagari Station by taxi.
One of the passengers said: “The heater was working at first, but it gradually became cold. The toilets were unusable. It’s the first time something like this has happened, so I’m surprised.”
The subsequent Shinkansen, Komachi No. 45 had also stopped in Akita Prefecture but the train was not affected by a power outage. Electricity and heating was working, and passengers remained inside.
The operational disruption caused other suspensions. Service on the Akita Shinkansen line has been halted between Morioka and Akita stations.
JR East says the power outage is believed to have occurred after a pantograph of an outbound train on a conventional line hit something. The company is looking into the cause of the stoppage and working to restore operations as soon as possible.

JR東日本は乗客全員をタクシーで大曲駅まで運んだ。
乗客の一人が言った： 「最初は暖房が効いていたのですが、だんだん寒くなってきました。トイレも使えなかった。こんなことは初めてなので驚いています “と話していた。
後続の新幹線こまち45号も秋田県に停車していたが、停電の影響はなかった。電気も暖房も動いており、乗客は車内にとどまっていた。
この運転見合わせにより、他にも運休が発生した。秋田新幹線は盛岡-秋田駅間で運転を見合わせている。
