Philippine military holds drill with Japan, US in South China Sea
The Philippine military says it has conducted a joint drill with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the US military in the South China Sea.
フィリピン軍は、日本の自衛隊および米軍と南シナ海で共同訓練を実施したと発表した。
The drill took place on Friday within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. It reportedly involved the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Samidare and US Navy patrol aircraft.
It was the fifth time the three countries held what they call a “maritime cooperative activity,” since last year.
In Friday’s drill, the three parties are said to have strengthened interoperability through confirming tactical and technical cooperation based on a joint plan.
The activity is believed to be aimed at keeping China in check given its increasing assertiveness in the area.
On Wednesday, a China Coast Guard ship fired water cannon and sideswiped a Philippine government vessel within the country’s exclusive economic zone. Such aggressive behavior has been increasing, including a Chinese navy vessel closely chasing a Philippine patrol boat.
The Philippine military said the joint drill is designed to protect freedom of navigation and all countries’ maritime interests, and to support a free and open Indo-Pacific.

訓練は金曜日にフィリピンの排他的経済水域内で行われた。海上自衛隊の護衛艦「さみだれ」と米海軍の哨戒機が参加したという。
三カ国が「海上協力活動」と呼ぶものを行ったのは、昨年以来5回目である。
金曜日の訓練では、3カ国は共同計画に基づく戦術的・技術的協力を確認し、相互運用性を強化したとされる。
この活動は、この海域で自己主張を強めている中国を牽制することを目的としていると考えられている。
水曜日には、中国沿岸警備隊の船がフィリピンの排他的経済水域内で水鉄砲を発射し、フィリピン政府船を横殴りにした。中国海軍の艦船がフィリピンの巡視船を間近で追うなど、こうした攻撃的な行動は増え続けている。
フィリピン軍は、合同訓練は航行の自由とすべての国の海洋権益を守り、自由で開かれたインド太平洋を支援するためのものだと述べた。
