Reviving livelihoods for quake-hit Noto residents a necessity
January 1 marks one year since a massive earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in central Japan. Still, the reconstruction of the affected areas is only halfway completed.
能登半島を襲った大地震から1月1日で1年を迎える。被災地の復興はまだ道半ばだ。
People say raising hopes by making steady progress toward reviving their livelihoods is a necessity.
The New Year’s Day magnitude 7.6 quake measured up to 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of zero to seven. It left 504 people dead in Ishikawa, Toyama and Niigata prefectures.
The figure includes 276 people who died from post-disaster causes. That number may rise after an official review of applications by bereaved relatives for the recognition of disaster-related deaths.
Fire officials say that as of December 24, more than 149,000 buildings in six prefectures were recognized as damaged by the quake.
Ishikawa Prefectural officials say around 40 percent of their publicly-funded demolition of buildings on behalf of the owners has been completed as of December 22.
Second blow by flooding in September
Some areas in the prefecture’s hard-hit Oku-Noto region were dealt a second blow by flooding from heavy rain in September. Many residents are voicing concerns about their future in light of the repeated natural disasters in their areas.
A memorial ceremony led by the prefecture is due to take place in Wajima City on Wednesday. Participants are expected to offer a silent prayer at 4:10 p.m., the exact time the quake hit one year ago.
Over 2,100 tremors have hit Noto region since 2024 New Year’s Day quake
The Japan Meteorological Agency says more than 2,100 tremors with an intensity of 1 or higher have been recorded in the Noto region in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, since a devastating earthquake struck there on January 1, 2024.
The magnitude 7.6 quake measured the maximum intensity of 7 in Wajima City and Shika Town on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to seven.
Seismic activity has been active in the Noto region since 2020. Since last year’s major quake, the number of jolts has increased in and around the region.
Some of them have been strong. In November, a magnitude 6.6 quake struck off the western coast of Ishikawa Prefecture. The tremor registered an intensity of lower 5 in the prefecture.
Agency officials say earthquakes have occurred less frequently overall, but it is difficult to predict when seismic activity will decline to levels seen before 2020.
The officials are calling on people in the region to remain vigilant.

元旦に発生したマグニチュード7.6の地震は震度7を記録。石川県、富山県、新潟県で死者504人を出した。
この数字には震災後の死者276人が含まれている。この数字は、遺族による震災関連死の認定申請を正式に審査した後に増える可能性がある。
消防当局によると、12月24日現在、6県で14万9000棟以上の建物が地震による被害を受けたと認定された。
石川県によると、22日現在、所有者に代わって公費で行われた建物解体の約40％が完了したという。
9月の洪水で2度目の打撃
石川県の奥能登地域では、9月の大雨による洪水で2度目の打撃を受けた地域がある。度重なる自然災害に、多くの住民から将来への不安の声が上がっている。
水曜日には、輪島市で県が主導する追悼式典が開催される予定だ。参加者は1年前の地震発生時刻である午後4時10分に黙祷を捧げる予定だ。
2024年元旦の地震以来、2100回以上の揺れが能登地方を襲う
気象庁によると、2024年1月1日に石川県能登地方で発生した大地震以来、震度1以上の揺れが2,100回以上観測された。
マグニチュード7.6の地震では、輪島市と志賀町で最大震度7を観測した。
能登地方では2020年以降、地震活動が活発化している。昨年の大地震以来、この地域とその周辺では揺れの回数が増えている。
中には強いものもある。11月には石川県西方沖でM6.6の地震が発生した。石川県では震度5弱を記録した。
地震庁の職員によると、地震は全体的に発生頻度が低下しているが、地震活動が2020年以前のレベルまで低下する時期を予測するのは難しいという。
当局は、地域の人々に引き続き警戒するよう呼びかけている。
