今回練習した Tell me about ~. (~のことを教えてください)も、Just をつけずに文を作るほうが自然。
フレンドリーな表現で、 かといって丁寧さに欠けるわけでもありません。 というのも、 「ぜひ教えてください」 と、 相手への興味を示すからです。 最近の出来事や相手の家族などについて、 ぜひこの表現を活用して尋ねてみてください。(It is friendly, but not less than polite, because “Please tell me about it. It is a friendly expression, but it is not less than polite, because it shows interest in the other person by saying, “Please tell me about it. Please use this expression to ask about recent events, family members, and so on.)
「今日一日どうでしたか?」と尋ねるなら、 Tell me about your day.と言えますね。
要注意の質問 – Where are you from?
世界中から人が集まる国際空港のロビーや人気のリゾート地などで、お互いに旅行者であることが明らかであればまだしも、 街なかで会った相手の外見が外国人に見えるからといって、いきなりこの質問をするのは避けましょう。
悪気はなく、 無難な会話の糸口として相手の出身について聞いているのだとしても、聞かれた相手からするとよそ者扱いされたようで、こちらの意図に反して疎外感を抱かせてしまう危険があります。 特に初対面の人には、 国籍や出身以外で会話の糸口を探りましょう。
(If you are in the lobby of an international airport or at a popular resort, where people from all over the world gather, and it is obvious that you are both tourists, you should avoid asking this question out of the blue, even if the person you meet on the street looks foreign.
Even if you do not mean to be offensive and are just asking about the person’s nationality as a safe conversation starter, the person you are asking about may feel like a stranger to you, and you risk alienating them against your intention. Especially when meeting someone for the first time, try to find a conversation starter other than nationality or origin.)
