♪ Topic 16: What do you think are the most important subjects in school? Day 4.
Let’s start off with a chat with Tomas. Tomas? (Yes.), may we ask you to tell us a little bit more about Portugal?
Yes. Of course.
Great.
Tomas, where did you grow up?
I grew up in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. I was actually there my whole life, pretty much, until I came to Japan.
Is there a word for someone who’s born in Lisbon?
We do have a word: “Lisboeta.”
Lisboeta.
That’s right. Cool.
What is Lisbon like?
Well, there is the older side of Lisbon and the newer side of Lisbon.
You mean the city has a new part and an old part?
Yes. That’s right. The older one is more traditional. The architecture is from a different era.
Ah, the architecture of the buildings…
That’s right.
… the streets. I see.
Yeah. For example, the streets in the older side are made of cobblestone.
Cobblestone?
Yeah.
Cobblestone is a kind of rough street made from rough stones.
Yeah. It’s very traditional. We actually have a name for it.
We call it “calçada.”
Calçada.
That’s the name of the street?
Yes.
I see.
There are also yellow trams that run in(→on) that street. It’s very nostalgic for us because it’s been running for many years. And depending on where you go, there are a lot of hills, so you’ll have to climb a lot.
Oh. So, what do you think is the best way to get around the city?
Hmm. If you want to enjoy all of the sights, I recommend walking, of course.
But you said there’s(there’re) lots of hills.
Yes. So, trams are a great way to get around.
Okay.
Another one is tuk-tuks.
Tuk-tuk?
Yeah.
What’s that?
Imagine a car without doors, kind of like a golf cart. My dad is actually a tuk-tuk driver.
Oh, nice. So, is that like a taxi service?
Yeah. But they also guide you around.
Ah. Like a tour guide?
Yeah. Exactly.
So, it’s perfect for tourists.
Yes.
So, your father must know a lot about Lisbon.
A lot.
You told us about the castle in Lisbon.
Right.
Is there anywhere else that would be fun to visit?
Oh, so many places.
Oh, tell us.
For example, there is this museum that has traditional Portuguese tiles in Lisbon.
Tiles?
Yeah. Unique patterns that are very traditional to Portugal. And the tiles are designed with bright colors, the original one being blue.
Does that mean you have lots of colorful buildings in Portugal?
Yes, we do.
Mmm. I’d love to see that.
Please come on by. And there is Parque das Nações, which is a big park – very big – that has a lot of nature, great restaurants. It has an aquarium and a cable car. So, you can spend your whole day there. I really recommend it.
And then there’s also Marquês de Pombal, which is a place where you can find a monument of a very important person.
Like a statue?
Yeah. Like a statue. And also a plaza.
Uh-huh. A large open area outside?
Yes. People go there to do many things, one of them being celebrating. They go there to celebrate soccer matches. You know, soccer is loved by everyone in Portugal.
Right. I heard it’s really big there.
Yeah. When a team wins, and you live next to the stadium, you probably won’t sleep.
Oh. What are they doing?
They’re outside. They’re screaming.
Screaming?
There’s(→There’re) fireworks and smoke and lights.
All night?
All night.
Wow. You said that people go to celebrate at the plaza where the statue is.
That’s right.
They go from the stadium to the plaza?
Oh, yes. So, this is only for big championships. We usually walk from the stadium to Marquês de Pombal, which is around one hour of walking.
Wow.
Yeah.
And a huge number of people are walking.
And a huge number. It’s like, uh…
Sounds like a party.
Yeah. It is a party. It is a huge outside party.

Now, let’s listen to Tomas’s and Sandy’s thoughts. So, Tomas, please tell us, what do you think are the most important subjects in school?
I have many subjects that I think are important. IT is the most important because everyone uses computers now. IT helps us solve problems and think in new ways. With all the changes in the world, learning about AI is also essential for our life. P.E. is also important for staying active and healthy, and I love dodgeball. Art classes give us a chance to be more creative, and literature classes help you think critically and find out more about yourself.
Yeah. So, you’re interested in many subjects.
Yeah.
All right. Everyone, Moeno, to understand what Tomas said better, we’ll ask you some questions. Here’s the first one:
Q1). Why does Tomas think IT is the most important subject?
