♪ Topic 18: What do you do to relax? Day 4.
Before we move into this week’s topic, let’s chat with Umi.
Hi, Umi.
Hi.
Umi, we’d like to know more about your school life in Uzbekistan. At what age do you start high school there?
Around 16.
Oh, okay.
So, that’s three years of high school?
Yes. Three years.
What time did your school start and end?
It starts(→started) from 8:00 a.m.
Oh, same here, when I was in high school. Yes.
How about you, Moeno?
8:15.
Oh, so specific.
And what time did it end?
Around 1:00 p.m.
Oh, wow. That’s a short day.
Or 2:30 p.m., depending (on) how many classes you have(had), but mainly 1:00 p.m.
So, it can(→could) change?
Yes.
Oh. Interesting.
What did you do after school?
It depended on what grade I was (in). When I was in the first grade, I would directly go home, finish my homework, and then meet with my neighbor(hood) friends. And we would spend time together talking or playing some games.
Oh, that’s nice.
And when I was in the second grade, I started taking extra classes for Russian grammar and literature as well as English classes in order to prepare for my university entrance exams.
So, you didn’t do extracurricular activities?
Not really. Every now and then, I played basketball. But mainly, it was studying.
Extracurricular activities are activities that are not part of your regular classes.
Like club activities.
Like a club activity. Yeah.
How did you get to school?
(It) depending(→depended) on what time I woke up.”
When I was running late, I would use (a) taxi.
Oh, wow.
Right.
You’d take a taxi to school if you were late.
Was that expensive?¥
Not really, because it’s quite common for us to use (a) taxi. We do have buses, but they don’t operate on (a) specific schedule. Therefore, I never knew what time it comes(→would come). So, I would just grab (a) taxi. And the moments(→ mornings) when I woke up early, I would walk.
So, did you take a taxi back home?
No. I usually walked back home. (Wow!) Yes. And it was far from my house. I’d say around three kilometers, which would take me approximately 40 minutes. (Oh, wow.) But on my way back home, there was this little supermarket, where I would buy coconut chocolate. It was my favorite. It was so delicious. I would get it pretty often and…
Oh, I was gonna ask that.
… and, yeah, and have it while walking back home. So, I liked that time because I would associate it with, “Okay!
This is the time for me to get the chocolate treat.”
So, 40 minutes’ walk – that wasn’t a problem.
Not at all. Even in (the) melting summer, I was getting that chocolate with coconut flavor.
I really like chocolate and coconut, too, so I understand.
Yeah. Very delicious combination.
