Yes. Edison says, “Compared to online classes, face-to-face classes are more effective.”
“Effective” means that something works well and does what it should do. Okay. We’ll find out more about the things Edison and Jake say on Day 2 and Day 3.
-New Words, New Phrases
Today’s first phrase is: in the swing of or into the swing of.
When you’re “in the swing of something,” it means that you’re doing something with a good rhythm, you’re doing it easily and well, and you’re enjoying it.
Right. In the dialogue, Edison asks Jake, “Getting back into the swing of classes?”
Yeah. The winter break has recently ended. So, Edison is asking, “Are you having fun going to classes again?”
Yes. If you decide to try something new – let’s say, learning to cook – and you start enjoying cooking, then you might say, “I’m getting in the swing of cooking.”
Right.
Our second new phrase today is: to last.
When you hear the word “last,” you might think of “the last” or “the final” or “the end” – but “to last” means “to continue.”
Right. In the dialogue, Jake says, “I wish the vacation could have lasted all winter.”
Yeah. He means, “I wish the vacation could have continued all winter” – in other words, from the start of December to the end of February.
In Japan, the cherry blossom season lasts only one or two weeks.
Mmm, it’s short. Moeno, at your high school, how long does one class last?
It lasts 45 minutes.
Mmm, I see. Very good.
Now, here’s our last new phrase for today: right away.
“Right away” means “immediately, without waiting.”
Right. In the dialogue, Edison says that a good point of face-to-face classes is that you can ask questions and get
answers right away.
Yes.
This is a little different from the similar expression “right now.”
Yeah. “Right now” refers to what is happening in the present moment.
And “right away” refers to what will happen next.
