-Q & A
Okay. Let’s find out more about what Edison says. To understand his thoughts better, we’ll ask you some questions.
Here’s the first one: Q1). According to Edison, compared to online classes, how are face-to-face classes? Moeno?
Face-to-face classes are more effective.
Nice. All right. Let’s listen to what Edison says.
-from the Dialogue
I’d rather have face-to-face classes than online classes.
But there are always people chatting and making noise during class. I can concentrate better alone in my room.
It’s fun to be with my friends instead of alone in my room. Besides, compared to online classes, face-to-face classes are more effective.
The question was: Q1). According to Edison, compared to online classes, how are face-to-face classes? And the answer is: A1). They are more effective than online classes. Of course, if you said, “Face-to-face classes are more effective,” as Moeno did, or “Face-to-face classes are more effective than online classes,” those are great answers, too. Great job.
Everyone, let’s practice this together. Ready? Face-to-face classes are more effective than online classes. Great job.
All right. Let’s move on to the next question. First, listen to this.
-What would you say?
Today, let’s look at some ways to say why you prefer face-to-face classes.
In the dialogue, Edison says: It’s fun to be with my friends instead of alone in my room.
Yeah. Jake says that he can concentrate better alone in his room, but Edison says that it’s fun to be with his friends instead of alone in his room.
The pattern here is: It’s fun to X instead of Y.
Yes. “Instead of” means “in place of.” It means that you choose one thing rather than another thing. For example:
It’s fun to watch movies instead of studying.
You could also say: It’s better to X instead of Y. For example: It’s better to sleep instead of staying up all night.
Or: I like to X instead of Y. For example: Moeno, when it’s raining, what do you like to do instead of going out?
I like to read books, listening to my favorite music, instead of going out.
Oh, me too.
Nice. Very nice. Okay. Let’s practice using Edison’s line. Let’s try it first in two parts. Ready?
“It’s fun to be with my friends” “instead of alone in my room.
And now, let’s try the whole thing at once.
It’s fun to be with my friends instead of alone in my room.
Very nice.
Good job. Edison also says that face-to-face classes are more effective. He says: It’s easier to communicate in the classroom.
Yeah. When you’re in a big group of people online, often you can’t see their faces, and that could make it hard to communicate.
But in a classroom, face-to-face, you may be able to communicate more easily. As Edison says, you can do group work, and you can ask questions and get answers right away.
