Topic 20: Do you prefer classes online or face-to-face? Day 4.
All right, then. Before we talk about this week’s topic, let’s have a chat. Umi, you said earlier that you’ve been living in Japan for 10 years. So, what brought you here, to Japan?
I went to (a) university – (an) international university – in Oita, Beppu. I studied international relations.
Ah. What was that like?
It was very difficult, but at the same time, interesting because I studied and learned a lot about different countries, their history, and what kind of events affected their relationships.
Oh, wow. Sounds very interesting.
What kind of extracurricular activities – activities outside of your classes – did you do?
Oh, yeah. That was one of my most favorite parts. So, because there were students from all over the world, not only we got(→ did we get) to experience Japanese culture, like tea ceremony, yosakoi dance, and wadaiko drums, but also there were lots of different clubs related to the cultures of other countries. So, it was (a) very interesting, diverse, and multinational atmosphere.
What kind of activities did you do?
I did a lot. And some of the activities that come to my mind right away are teaching English to elementary and high school students. Also, having cultural exchange – I got to introduce my culture, Uzbek culture, to local people. And then the other one that was (a) very heartwarming experience, trying to make sushi roll, makizushi, with local, Beppu elderly people. It was very interesting because in my country, we don’t have sushi. So, it was (a) very fun experience to roll sushi myself. And then the most fun of it, of course, was eating it. It was very delicious.
Oh, it sounds great.
How did you like Beppu?
Well, I loved Beppu. In fact, I would love to go back and live there again.
Really?
I love it because there is so much nature – lots of mountains, greenery, forests. It feels very peaceful, like, waking up to nature sounds every day. And the beach was just five minutes’ walk from my house. (Oh, wow!) And watching the sunset was (a) very peaceful and beautiful experience.
That’s great.
Did you enjoy onsen in Beppu?
Yes. I loved it so much, especially in winter. And then another thing, by the way, I remember in Beppu, they also have steamed food.
Steamed food?
Yes. They used the steam coming from onsen, the hot spring, and it was very delicious, something I have (→had) never tried before.
I’ve tried it.
Oh, you did?
Yes.
Wow. What did you try?
I’ve had a pudding.
Oh, yeah. Pudding is really delicious. What else?
Vegetables and eggs.
Oh, that’s what I tried. Yes.
That sounds delicious.
It’s really good. Yeah.
