♪ Topic 19: How do you celebrate the New Year? Day 4.
Before we move into this week’s topic, let’s have a chat. Umi, we’d like to know more about Uzbekistan. So, what is the weather like there?
In summer, it’s super-hot. And in winter, it’s extremely cold.
Oh.
Yeah.
How hot is it in the summer?
In summer, it might go up to 40 degrees.
And how cold is it in the winter?
In the winter, minus 11, 12 Celsius. (Wow!) Yes. Very cold, like in the fridge. No, in the freezer.
In the freezer. Oh, my gosh. So, is it very dry, or is it very humid in the summer?
It’s very dry both in summer and winter because we don’t have ocean.
Oh!
There’s no ocean.
Right.
There’s no coast.
Yeah. When I came to Japan, it was the first time I saw ocean. (Oh, wow!) Yeah. Pacific Ocean. It was amazing . I still remember that day when I saw it for the first time. It was beyond beautiful.
That’s lovely.
What languages do they speak in Uzbekistan?
Their official language is the Uzbek language. We also speak Russian and Tajik, depending on the region. Yes, in some cities, we speak Tajik as well.
Okay. And what language did you speak in school?
There are(→were) two languages you can (→could) study in Uzbek or Russian.
Oh, okay.
I personally went to school in Uzbek.
