ストーリーの中で、タカシがグレイに「アルフィーは尻尾を振るの?」と尋ねていました。
犬は嬉しい時に尻尾を振りますね。ペットの動作には他にどんな言葉があるのでしょうか。
犬の場合他にもいっぱいあります
わんわんと吠える動作は英語で bark と言います。
My dog barks a lot. のように使います。それから、はっはっはと息をするのは pant という動詞を使って表現します。It’s hot today. My dog is panting a lot.
こんな感じです。
私は猫の動きを紹介します。猫はリラックスすると、手をもみもみさせますが、これはパン生地などをこねるときに使う動詞、mead と同じなんです。
ああ、確かに似てますよね。
それから、くるっと丸くなるのは、curl up です。
My cat likes to curl up next to me. のように使います。
あと、のどを鳴らすのは、purr と言います。purr は、 飼い主ラブの動作だから、特に大好きな動作です。
日本語では、擬音を使って表すような動作にも、一つ一つ単語があるんですね。面白いです。

ten slices of -で、10枚の〜、10切れの〜という意味になります。
sliceは普通、薄く切ったものや薄い形状のものに使います。of の後には数えられない名詞を置きます。今日のキーセンテンスでは、of の後に ham が使われています。ham は、 スライスする前の一つの片前の場合には a ham と数えられますが、切り分けると数えられない名詞になります。ちなみに一枚の ham は a slice of ham と言います。
それでは他の例文も見てみましょう
1). Do you want another slice of pizza?
あなたはもう一切れのピザが欲しいですか?
another slice of 〜はもう一枚の〜何? という意味です。pizza はまるまる一枚の場合には、a pizza のように数えられますが、切り分けた場合には数えられない名詞になります。次です。
2). I wrote down Jane’s address on a piece of paper.
私は紙切れにJaneの住所を書き留めました。
piee は一辺や部分という意味があり、切り分けたものの一つを表すときに使います。
a piece of paper 紙切れや一枚の紙という意味です。
紙という意味の paper は数えられない名詞です。次です。
3). I bought two pieces of pie for my sisters.
私は妹たちのためにパイを二切れ買いました。
パイも切ったものは数えられない名詞です。二切れのパイのように複数の場合には piece を複数形にしてtwo pieces of pie と言います。
