one giant living thing とありますが、地下に菌糸が広がっていて、そこからキノコが生えてきます。 つまり、この森で生えているキノコは実は1つの生物としてつながっているということです。

fungus. 菌類
という意味です。 複数形は fungi と言います。 ストーリーによく出てくる mushrooms, つまりキノコは、菌類 fungus の一種です。 日本語で mushroom と聞くと、白くて丸いキノコを想像するかもしれませんが、英語では全てのキノコを mushroom と言います。 特定のキノコの事を言いたい時は、shiitake mushrooms のように言います。
カビや麹なども fungus の一種です。 キノコだけじゃなくて、チーズやパン、ワインや日本酒のように発酵食品には fungus の仲間が関わっているものが多いですよ。

likeには、「～のような」という意味の前置詞としての働きもあります。 likeの後には名詞を置きます。 like は such as よりもカジュアルな表現です。 それでは他の例文も見てみましょう。
1). I love noodles, like soba and udon.
私はそばやうどんなどの麺類が大好きです。 likeの後に例を2つ挙げています。 次です。
2). I’d like to visit warm places in winter, like Australia and New Zealand.
私は冬にはオーストラリアやニュージーランドのような暖かい場所を訪れたいです。
warm places がどんな場所かを補足して説明するために、文の最後にlikeを使って例を示しています。 こういう時には like の前にカンマを置くことがあります。 次です。
3). What is your English teacher like? He’s really funny.
