Now, let’s start today’s lesson.
Lesson 208 ナラタケについて分かったこと

まずはストーリーを聞いて大まかに話の流れをつかみましょう。テキストをお持ちの方はイラストを見ながら聞いてください。
グレイ、ミカ、タカシ、斉藤先生はグレイのお父さんが用意してくれたもてなしの料理を食べています。タカシが言った言葉にミカは何を思い出したようです。ミカはタカシに何と言ったのか聞き返します。

Remember the national forest in Oregon?

There were sick trees with mushrooms on them.

Yeah. I couldn’t understand it, but later, I looked it up.
And?
The Armillaria fungus grows on weak trees and kills them.

sick trees は病気の樹という意味です。

ナラタケは弱った木に育って枯らしてしまうんです。

まるでこの森のようにだね。

その通り！
動詞 kill には殺すという意味の他に植物などを枯らすという意味があります。キノコについてたくさん調べているミカはタカシの kill という言葉に反応して、ナラタケが弱った木を枯らすことを思い出したのですね。

-Tell me more. ストーリーに出てきた言葉やフレーズを1つ取り上げて、クリスとダイアナにその使い方を教えてもらいましょう。
今日取り上げるのは I looked it up.
look – up または Look up – で、何々を調べる、検索するという意味の熟語です。
代名詞を使う場合は必ず look it up、look them up のような語順になります。日常会話でよく使う表現です。例えばこんな感じです。
Can you look up the train times for me?
Sure. Uh, it will arrive at the station in 10 minutes.
もちろん、学校で調べ物をする時にも使えます。こんな感じです。
I’m going to the library to look up information about mushrooms.
図書館にキノコについての情報を調べに行きます。
スマートフォンなどを使って何かを検索する機会は多いと思います。とっさに I’ll look it up などと言えるように練習しておきましょう。

-Today’s key points. 今日の学習ポイントは、今月の「できるようになること」「さまざまな表現で話してみよう」です。そして今日のキーセンテンスはこちら。
I couldn’t understand it.
私はそれを理解できませんでした。
〜できませんでした、と言う時は couldn’t を動詞の前に置き、動詞は原形を使います。couldn’t は could not の短縮形です。could は can の過去形です。

We couldn’t see the singer well from our seats.
私たちは自分たちの席からはその歌手がよく見えませんでした。
見えませんでした、は couldn’t see となります。
I couldn’t find the post office on my way to his house.
私は彼の家へ行く途中で郵便局を見つけられませんでした。
見つけられませんでした、は couldn’t find となります。on my way to – は、〜へ行く途中でという意味です。次です。
I couldn’t get there on time because of the snow.
雪のため私はそこに時間通りに着くことができませんでした。
on time は時間通りにという意味です。

-Now, repeat each sentence after us.

-Try repeating. ここでは聞こえてきた英文を言う練習をします。英文の後に少し間を空けるので、その間に頭の中でリハーサルしておいてください。私が「どうぞ」と言ったら声に出していってくださいね。
