Romania’s top court has scrapped the results of the first round of the country’s presidential election, won by a little-known, pro-Russia candidate.
ルーマニアの最高裁判所は、あまり知られていない親ロシア派の候補者が勝利した同国の大統領選挙の第一ラウンドの結果を破棄した。
Calin Georgescu, who ran as an independent and campaigned heavily on TikTok and other social media platforms, secured the first round on November 24. He even beat the incumbent prime minister, who was considered the favorite.
The Constitutional Court published its decision on Friday to annul the election. Without naming Georgescu, it said the non-transparent use of digital technologies resulted in the distortion of voters’ expressed will.
A runoff vote, which was scheduled for Sunday, has been canceled.
On Sunday, Georgescu appeared with his supporters at a polling station where he had planned to vote for himself.
He denounced Friday’s ruling, saying that democracy was cancelled with the court. He said, “We shall continue the democratic manner,” suggesting that he will implement his policies through the election.
Current President Klaus Iohannis, whose term is scheduled to end on December 21, said new election dates will be set by a new government that emerges from legislative elections earlier this month. Iohannis said he would stay in his post until a successor is elected.
There has also been criticism of the court’s unprecedented decision. Attention is focused on whether the new presidential election will be held without major confusion.
Romania, which neighbors Ukraine, has attached importance to its relations with NATO and the European Union since the end of the Cold War. Last year, Romania opened its military base to Ukrainian soldiers for training.
