A Japanese organization has unveiled its latest ranking of the country’s municipalities with the best nightscapes. The city of Yokohama came second, putting it among the top three for the first time.
日本のある団体が、夜景の美しい自治体の最新ランキングを発表した。横浜市は2位で、初めてトップ3に入った。
YAKEI Convention & Visitors Bureau announced the list of Three Japanese Cities with the Most Spectacular Night Views.
Yokohama became the first municipality in the greater Tokyo area to be one of the top three.
The city boasts the large-scale event called Yorunoyo, in which buildings and other structures in the Minato Mirai waterfront area and nearby locations are lit up during the night. It also holds fireworks displays at the local port on an irregular basis.
Yokohama Mayor Yamanaka Takeharu said he is very glad that municipal and community initiatives have led to the accolade. He added that he will further push programs to let people enjoy Yokohama’s nightscapes.
The city of Kitakyushu and the city of Nagasaki retained the first and third spot, respectively. Both are in the western region of Japan.
The ranking is disclosed every three years to help rejuvenate local communities through the promotion of night views as tourism resources. It is created through votes by individuals certified by the organization as specialists of nightscape tourism.

横浜市の山中武治市長は、市や地域の取り組みが今回の受賞につながったことを大変嬉しく思うと述べた。さらに、横浜の夜景を楽しんでもらうためのプログラムをさらに推進していくと付け加えた。
1位は北九州市、3位は長崎市だった。どちらも西日本の都市である。
このランキングは、夜景を観光資源として地域活性化につなげることを目的に3年ごとに発表されている。同団体が認定する夜景観光のスペシャリストによる投票で決まる。
