An Indian teenager became the youngest-ever world chess champion after edging out the Chinese titleholder in their showdown in Singapore.
インドのティーンエイジャーが、シンガポールでの対決で中国のタイトル保持者を抑え、史上最年少のチェス世界チャンピオンとなった。
Eighteen-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju burst into tears after clinching victory on Thursday. He fought 14 intense matches over three weeks against 32-year-old Ding Liren. The series was expected to go to a tiebreaker, but a shock blunder by Ding handed Gukesh the win.
The bearded prodigy told reporters he had dreamt about the moment for years. He said: “My whole strategy for this match was to push as much as possible in every single game with both colors. I want to play for as long as I can, and I want to have a very, very long career and to stay at the very, very top.”
Born to a doctor father and microbiologist mother in the south Indian city of Chennai, Gukesh began playing chess aged 7. The previous youngest world champion was Garry Kasparov, who took the title aged 22. Gukesh is the second Indian grandmaster to be crowned champion of the world. He takes home over a million dollars.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Gukesh on making all the right moves. He wrote on X that his feat was down to his “unparalleled talent, hard work and unwavering determination.”
