Japanese police: Lost property reports hit new record in 2023

Japanese police say nearly 30 million items of lost property were reported last year, a new record high.
日本の警察によると、昨年は約3000万件の遺失物が届けられ、過去最高を記録した。

The National Police Agency says about 29,787,000 lost items were reported nationwide in 2023, an increase of about 3.15 million from the previous year. That’s the highest figure since police began keeping such data in 1971.
警察庁によると、2023年には全国で約2,978万7,000点の遺失物が届けられ、前年より約315万点増加した。これは1971年に警察がこのようなデータを取り始めて以来、最も高い数字である。

The agency attributes the surge to an increase in foot traffic since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in May last year. The previous record was set in 2019 when about 29,750,000 items were reported.
昨年5月にCOVID-19の規制が解除されて以来、人の往来が増えたことが急増の原因だと同庁は分析している。これまでの記録は、約2,975万点が報告された2019年であった。

It says the most common lost items are small electronic devices, such as wireless earphones and mobile mini-fans.
紛失物で最も多いのは、ワイヤレスイヤホンや携帯ミニ扇風機などの小型電子機器だという。

The agency also says there has been an increase in lost property reports for reusable shopping bags, heated tobacco devices and mobile battery chargers.
また、再利用可能な買い物袋、加熱式タバコ器具、モバイルバッテリー充電器などの遺失物届けも増加しているという。

The police speculate that people are carrying more things with them as downsized products become more popular.
警察は、小型化製品の普及に伴い、人々がより多くのものを持ち歩くようになったのではないかと推測している。

They are urging people to pay more attention to their belongings, and to file a report as soon as they lose something.
持ち物にもっと注意を払い、なくしたらすぐに届け出るよう呼びかけている。
