Well, in my personal experience, parents and teachers use this technique a lot. “Tom,” they say, “I know that you’ll make the right decision.” It makes me feel responsible, it makes me feel respected, but they’re not saying what the right decision is.

Right. So a lot of times I know that you’ll make the right decision actually means I know that you’ll make what I think is the right decision. In other words, I think you’ll do what I want you to do.
