The Doctor Yellow inspection trains for Shinkansen lines in Japan are set to be retired due to aging and other factors.
日本の新幹線用検査車両「ドクターイエロー」が老朽化などの理由で引退することになった。
Central Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company announced their plans on Thursday. JR Central plans to retire theirs in January next year, and JR West in 2027 or later.
JR東海とJR西日本が13日、計画を発表した。JR東海は来年1月、JR西日本は2027年以降に引退する予定だ。
The yellow diagnostic trains based on the N700 series are used on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines to check the condition of tracks and other facilities. The seven-car trains make inspection trips about every 10 days.
N700系をベースにした黄色い診断車は、東海道・山陽新幹線で線路や施設の状態を点検するために使われている。7両編成で、約10日に1回の割合で点検運転が行われる。
N700S Shinkansen trains with special equipment are expected to take over the inspection work.
今後は、N700S型新幹線に特殊な設備を搭載した車両が検査業務を引き継ぐ予定。
The public cannot ride Doctor Yellow trains except for special occasions, and their schedules are not disclosed. Spotting one is said to bring happiness, and they are popular among train fans.
ドクターイエローは、特別な日以外は一般の人は乗ることができず、ダイヤも公開されていない。見かけると幸せになれるといわれ、鉄道ファンの間でも人気がある。
