POLLEN SEASON ARRIVING EARLY IN JAPAN
Well, it looks like pollen season has come early this year in Japan. The environment ministry also forecasts higher-than-usual levels of the particles, which can cause itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion for people who are allergic.
This Tokyo drugstore set up its anti-pollen products section two weeks earlier than usual. The allergy season usually starts in February, but this year, airborne cedar pollen was observed in Tokyo on January 8, the earliest date on record.

“I can’t stop sneezing in the morning. It’s depressing to think my symptoms will only get worse from now on.”
An environment ministry survey found that nationwide, the number of male cedar flower buds, which produce the pollen, slightly exceeds the average recorded in the last 10 years. The figure was especially high in the western region of Kinki. It was 5.6 times the average in Kyoto and nearly five times the average in Osaka.
An expert warns that even those who’ve never experienced hay fever symptoms may feel irritation this year.

この東京のドラッグストアは、例年より2週間早く花粉対策商品のコーナーを設けた。アレルギーのシーズンは例年2月に始まるが、今年は1月8日に東京でスギ花粉の飛散が観測された。

環境省の調査によると、花粉を作るスギの雄花のつぼみの数が、全国的に過去10年間の平均をわずかに上回っていることがわかった。特に多かったのは近畿の西部地方。京都では平均の5.6倍、大阪では5倍近い。
専門家は、花粉症の症状を経験したことのない人でも、今年は刺激を感じるかもしれないと警告している。
