Tom:
Well… On the surface, this is kind of an unusual phrase, right? Why have got? Why back? Well, one theory says it comes from the military. A soldier’s back is the area behind them. So if another soldier says, I’ve got your back, that means they’re protecting your back area. The place you can’t see in case something happens.
Daimon:
軍の兵士たちが使うことから来たという説があるそうですね。 兵士の back というと後方を意味しますけれども、後ろは見られないんですよね、自分はね。 なので、後ろから敵に襲われても対処しづらいということがあります。 それで、I’ve got your back というと、後ろ側をカバーしてるよ、守ってるよということになります。
Naomi:
後ろは任せろって感じですかね。
Daimon:
そうそうそう、そういうことですね。 今回のアルバニージー首相の言葉では、政府は味方だよ、オーストラリアの親たちをサポートするよというふうに使ってますね。

Okay, Tom, what do you think of Australia’s new move to ban children under 16 from using social media?
Tom:
I suppose I understand where the Australian government is coming from. I know they have good intentions, but I’m not a fan of the ban. Social media gets too much of a bad rap, in my opinion.
