Survivors hope for new dawn 1 year after Noto quake
It’s been one year since a massive earthquake struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula on New Year’s Day. Survivors stopped to remember loved ones at a public memorial Wednesday.
元旦に能登半島を襲った大地震から1年。水曜日の追悼式では、被災者たちが足を止め、愛する人たちを偲んだ。
‘I was devastated by the sudden event’
Kobayashi Yukiko represented the bereaved families at the event. Her father, Youichi, died when the earthquake struck. It also destroyed her family’s store, which had stood for over 130 years.
Kobayashi Yukiko, Representative of victims’ families:
The New Year’s Day earthquake instantly turned our store into a pile of debris. Not only that, our parent’s nearby home was also destroyed and I lost my beloved father in the rubble. He was dedicated to his job and supported our family. He always watched over us with a gentle smile. I was devastated by the sudden event and was overwhelmed by despair.
Kobayashi said she considered not re-opening the store.
But she said her neighbors supported her with their kind words. For now, she’s restarted the family business on the town’s temporary shopping street.
Kobayashi Yukiko:
Right now, it’s just baby steps, but I hope to protect our store with my husband and keep moving forward with our neighbors. This is my way of showing gratitude to my father and returning the favor to my community.
Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru also attended the ceremony. He said the country is committed to the recovery and reconstruction of the region.

I am deeply pained by the profound sorrow of the bereaved families who lost their loved ones and the regret of those who fell victim to the two disasters. It is truly a source of immense pain and an overwhelming sense of grief. To restore the vibrant towns here and the smiles of their people, the government will work as one to rebuild these lives and livelihoods, and restore the affected areas.
Residents prayed for peace and for the recovery
January 1 marks one year since a massive earthquake rocked Japan’s Noto Peninsula. While the scars of the disaster remain, many hope the new year will also mean a new beginning.
Residents and volunteers in Wajima City observed the New Year at a local shrine. It was damaged by the earthquake and repairs are still ongoing. Visitors said they prayed for peace and for the region’s recovery.
A man in his 70s who lost his entire house in the disaster said he prayed that Wajima will recover, people will return and the population will grow, so that the city will prosper.
A woman in her 30s said she’d like to make this year one in which people can get back to normal and live happily.
The magnitude 7.6 quake left 504 people dead across central Japan’s Ishikawa, Toyama and Niigata prefectures.
Then came a second blow last September, when heavy rains battered the Noto region, claiming the lives of 16 people.
The disasters have hit some people particularly hard. A man in his 60s lost his house and the Japanese restaurant he ran for 35 years. Now, he lives alone in a temporary home in Wajima City.
He said the hardest part is that he still can’t work and that it is really frustrating. He added that he wants to cook and go back to his job, but things aren’t going well.
Over 2,100 tremors have hit Noto region since 2024 New Year’s Day quake
The Japan Meteorological Agency says more than 2,100 tremors with an intensity of 1 or higher have been recorded in the Noto region in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, since a devastating earthquake struck there on January 1, 2024.
The magnitude 7.6 quake measured the maximum intensity of 7 in Wajima City and Shika Town on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to seven.
Seismic activity has been active in the Noto region since 2020. Since last year’s major quake, the number of jolts has increased in and around the region.
Some of them have been strong. In November, a magnitude 6.6 quake struck off the western coast of Ishikawa Prefecture. The tremor registered an intensity of lower 5 in the prefecture.
Agency officials say earthquakes have occurred less frequently overall, but it is difficult to predict when seismic activity will decline to levels seen before 2020.
The officials are calling on people in the region to remain vigilant.

突然の出来事に打ちのめされた
小林由紀子は遺族代表として出席した。彼女の父、陽一は地震で亡くなった。130年以上続いた実家の店舗も倒壊した。

元旦の地震で店は一瞬にして瓦礫の山と化しました。それだけでなく、近くにあった実家も全壊し、最愛の父を瓦礫の中で亡くしました。仕事一筋で家族を支えてくれた父。いつも優しい笑顔で私たちを見守ってくれていた。突然の出来事に打ちのめされ、絶望に打ちひしがれました」。
小林は、店を再開しないことも考えたという。
しかし、近所の人たちが優しい言葉で支えてくれたという。今は、町の仮設商店街で家業を再開している。
小林由紀子：
今はまだ小さな一歩ですが、主人と一緒にお店を守り、ご近所の皆さんと一緒に前に進んでいきたいと思っています。それが父への感謝であり、地域への恩返しだと思っています。
石破茂首相も式典に出席した。石破茂首相は、国として被災地の復旧・復興に全力を尽くすと述べた。

平和と復興を祈る住民たち
能登半島を襲った大地震から1月1日で1年を迎える。震災の傷跡が残る中、新しい年が新たな始まりを意味することを多くの人が望んでいる。
輪島市の住民とボランティアは、地元の神社で新年を迎えた。この神社は地震で被害を受け、現在も修理が続いている。訪れた人々は、平和と地域の復興を祈ったという。
震災で家屋をすべて失った70代の男性は、「輪島が復興し、人が戻り、人口が増え、街が栄えますように」と祈った。
30代の女性は「元気を取り戻し、幸せに暮らせる年にしたい」と語った。
マグニチュード7.6の地震は、石川、富山、新潟の3県で死者504人を出した。
そして昨年9月、能登地方を襲った豪雨は16人の命を奪った。
災害は、特に大きな打撃を一部の人々に与えた。ある60代の男性は、自宅と35年間経営していた日本料理店を失った。現在は輪島市の仮設住宅で一人暮らしをしている。
一番つらいのは、いまだに仕事ができないことで、本当に悔しいという。料理を作って仕事に戻りたいが、なかなかうまくいかない」と付け加えた。
2024年元旦の地震以来、2100回以上の揺れが能登地方を襲う
気象庁によると、2024年1月1日に石川県能登地方で壊滅的な地震が発生して以来、震度1以上の揺れが2,100回以上観測されている。
マグニチュード7.6の地震では、輪島市と志賀町で最大震度7を観測した。
能登地方では2020年以降、地震活動が活発化している。昨年の大地震以来、この地域とその周辺では揺れの回数が増えている。
中には強いものもある。11月には石川県西方沖でM6.6の地震が発生した。石川県では震度5弱を記録した。
地震庁の職員によると、地震は全体的に発生頻度が低下しているが、地震活動が2020年以前のレベルまで低下する時期を予測するのは難しいという。
当局は、地域の人々に引き続き警戒するよう呼びかけている。
