US military implements operational pause for Osprey aircraft
The US military has temporarily paused operations of its Osprey transport aircraft. This comes after an Osprey nearly crashed in the United States last month.
米軍は輸送機オスプレイの運用を一時停止した。先月、オスプレイがアメリカで墜落しそうになったことを受けてのことだ。
The US Navy told NHK on Monday that the Navy has implemented an operational pause for all its Osprey planes. It added that it will determine if any additional safety measures are necessary during the pause.
The Navy did not give a reason for the move or say how long the pause will last.
The US Air Force said that a commander has implemented a pause for all Osprey flight training operations.
The US Marine Corps has announced that it decided to implement a 96-hour operational pause for non-essential operations of Ospreys. It said the pause started last Friday.
The US military says it has notified the Japanese government about its decision.
The Associated Press says the military decided to implement the operational pause for its Ospreys after a weakened metal part inside one of the aircraft broke apart during a flight on November 20. An engine reportedly failed as a result, and the plane nearly crashed. The incident occurred at an Air Force base in the state of New Mexico.
Previously, the US grounded its Osprey fleet in December last year after a fatal crash off the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima. All eight people onboard were killed in the crash.

米軍、オスプレイの運用一時停止を実施
米海軍は月曜日、NHKの取材に対し、海軍は全てのオスプレイの運用を一時停止したと発表した。さらに、一時停止中に追加の安全対策が必要かどうかを判断すると付け加えた。
海軍はその理由や、一時停止がいつまで続くかは明らかにしなかった。
米空軍は、司令官がすべてのオスプレイの飛行訓練の一時停止を実施したと発表した。
米海兵隊は、オスプレイの不要不急の運用について96時間の運用休止を決めたと発表した。一時停止は先週の金曜日から始まったという。
米軍はその決定を日本政府に通知したという。
AP通信によると、米軍は20日の飛行中にオスプレイ1機の内部の弱った金属部品がばらばらになったことを受け、運用休止を決めたという。その結果、エンジンが故障し、墜落寸前までいったという。この事故はニューメキシコ州の空軍基地で発生した。
アメリカは昨年12月、鹿児島県南西沖でオスプレイの墜落事故を起こしている。この墜落事故では、搭乗していた8人全員が死亡した。
