Cambodians file suit against farm manager in Japan over sexual assaults
Three Cambodian women who worked as technical interns at a Japanese farm have filed a compensation lawsuit against its manager. They say he repeatedly sexually assaulted one of them.
日本の農場で技能実習生として働いていた3人のカンボジア人女性が、農場長を相手取って賠償訴訟を起こした。彼女たちによると、彼はそのうちの一人に繰り返し性的暴行を加えたという。
The manager denies the accusation and shows he intends to contest the suit in court.
The Cambodians are in their 20s. They worked at a strawberry farm in Tochigi Prefecture until April 2023. They filed their claim with the Tokyo District Court.
Their lawyers and a labor union supporting the plaintiffs held a news conference in Tokyo on Monday.
One of the lawyers said one of the Cambodian women had been told by the manager to come to the workshop and other locations, where she says she was repeatedly sexual assaulted over a period of around five months.
The lawyer quoted her as saying the manager threatened to send her back to Cambodia if she refused his sexual contact.
The plaintiffs say she became pregnant and was forced to have an abortion without being given a sufficient explanation.
They say the manager also molested the other two women by touching their breasts and other areas of their bodies. The plaintiffs are demanding a total of about 92 million yen, or 600,000 dollars.
The union quoted the first woman as saying she had little choice but to put up with the assaults because she was in debt having borrowed money to come to Japan. The union added she wants to be helped so that there will be no more victims like her.
The farm manager told NHK he acknowledges he had sexual intercourse with the woman. But he denied making threats, saying he thought she had given him consent.
The manager also said he never molested the other two women.

弁護士の一人によると、カンボジア人女性の一人は、経営者から作業所などに来るように言われ、約5ヶ月にわたって繰り返し性的暴行を受けたという。
同弁護士は彼女の言葉を引用し、マネージャーは性的接触を拒否すればカンボジアに送り返すと脅したと述べた。
原告は妊娠し、十分な説明を受けることなく中絶を強要されたという。
店長は他の2人の女性に対しても、胸などを触るなどの痴漢行為を行ったという。原告側は総額約9200万円（60万ドル）を要求している。
同組合は、最初の女性の言葉を引用し、「日本に来るために借金をしたため、暴行を我慢するしかなかった」と述べた。組合は、彼女のような被害者がこれ以上出ないように助けてほしいと付け加えた。
農場長はNHKの取材に対し、女性と性交渉を持ったことは認めると述べた。しかし、脅迫したことは否定し、彼女が同意したと思っていたと語った。
農場長はまた、他の2人の女性に性的虐待をしたことはないと語った。
