Yomiuri newspaper editor-in-chief Watanabe Tsuneo dies at 98
Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun says the newspaper group’s top executive, Watanabe Tsuneo, has died. Watanabe was an influential figure in the country’s political circles and professional sports for decades.
日本の読売新聞社は、新聞グループのトップである渡辺恒雄氏が死去したと発表した。渡辺氏は何十年もの間、日本の政界やプロスポーツ界で影響力のある人物であった。
The Yomiuri Shimbun says the group’s representative director and editor-in-chief died of pneumonia at a Tokyo hospital early on Thursday. He was 98.
Born in 1926 in Tokyo, Watanabe joined The Yomiuri Shimbun, one of Japan’s most widely circulated newspapers, in 1950.
For many years, as a political affairs reporter, he covered the Liberal Democratic Party, which has been in power for most of the postwar period.
He was close to many LDP leaders, including former Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro.
Watanabe served as chief of the newspaper’s political news department. He later became the publication’s editor-in-chief, and he held that position until he died.
Watanabe became president of the newspaper in 1991 and served later as chairman of Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings for more than 12 years.
In 1999, he also became chairman of the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association. He served in that capacity for four years.
Watanabe also had broad influence in sports. In 1996, he became the owner of the Yomiuri Giants professional baseball club.
He helped revise the draft system for the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization.
He also served as a member of the Japan Sumo Association’s Yokozuna Deliberation Council.
Watanabe received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in 2008.

読売新聞によれば、同グループの代表取締役編集長は木曜日未明、肺炎のため東京の病院で死去したという。享年98歳。
1926年に東京で生まれた渡辺氏は、1950年に日本で最も発行部数の多い新聞のひとつである読売新聞に入社。
長年、政治部記者として、戦後ほとんど政権を担ってきた自民党を取材した。
中曽根康弘元首相をはじめ、多くの自民党幹部と親しかった。
同紙政治部長を歴任。その後、同紙の編集長となり、亡くなるまで編集長を務めた。
1991年に社長に就任し、その後読売新聞ホールディングスの会長を12年以上務めた。
1999年には日本新聞協会の会長にも就任。4年間務めた。
渡辺氏はスポーツ界にも大きな影響力を持った。1996年、プロ野球・読売ジャイアンツのオーナーに就任。
日本野球機構のドラフト制度改正にも貢献した。
日本相撲協会の横綱審議委員も務めた。
2008年に旭日大綬章を受章。
