New president takes office in Georgia amid pro-EU demonstrations
A hardline critic of the West has been sworn in as president of Georgia as people continue to demonstrate for EU membership.
EU加盟を求めるデモが続くグルジアで、西側諸国を批判する強硬派が大統領に就任した。
An inauguration ceremony was held in the former Soviet republic on Sunday for new President Mikheil Kavelashvili, who was a former professional soccer player.
Kavelashvili was elected in a parliamentary vote earlier this month with support from the ruling Georgian Dream party, which gained a majority in the parliamentary election in October.
Pro-Western opposition parties and former President Salome Zourabichvili have not recognized Kavelashvili as a legitimate president. They say there were electoral violations in the October election.
Mass protests have continued in the capital, Tbilisi, since the government announced in November its decision to suspend talks on joining the European Union.
A number of demonstrators holding EU flags gathered outside the parliamentary building on Sunday in protest against the inauguration of the new president.
Zourabichvili spoke to her supporters before leaving the presidential palace. She said, “Wherever I am, in the presidential palace or outside the palace, I will come out of here to you and I will be with you.”
She added, “where there is no trust of the people, there will be no legitimacy.”
The former president and the opposition are poised to seek a rerun of the parliamentary election.
But the ruling party is expected to consolidate power with the new anti-EU president in office.
Local experts say the Georgian government may distance itself further from Western countries.

しかし、与党は権力を強化する見込みである。
