Japan Coast Guard officials say Chinese government ships were spotted in the contiguous zone just outside Japanese territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea in 2024 on a record 353 days, exceeding last year’s 352.
海上保安庁の発表によると、2024年に東シナ海の尖閣諸島沖の日本領海のすぐ外側にある中国公船が、昨年の352日を上回る353日間に確認されたという。
The officials say four Chinese government ships were navigating in the contiguous zone as of 12 a.m. on Sunday. This brings the number of days on which Chinese ships were spotted in the zone to the highest ever since 2008, when such vessels were first confirmed navigating there.
The officials say they confirmed 39 cases as of Saturday where Chinese government vessels entered Japan’s territorial waters around the Senkakus. That is almost the same number as in the past few years.
They also say that among them, there were 18 cases in which the vessels tried to approach Japanese fishing boats in the territorial waters, tying the record high marked in 2021.
Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan’s territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.
Senior Japan Coast Guard official Sakamoto Seishiro, said the situation remains grave, but vowed to ramp up monitoring and vigilance under the policy of firmly protecting Japan’s territorial land and waters, so as not to overlook any slight changes.
He added that the Coast Guard will continue to respond calmly and resolutely to safeguard Japan’s territorial waters while closely coordinating with relevant organizations.

日午前12時現在、4隻の中国公船が領海内を航行していたという。これにより、中国船の航行が初めて確認された2008年以降、同海域で中国船が目撃された日数は過去最高となった。
当局によれば、土曜日の時点で、中国政府の船舶が尖閣周辺の日本の領海に侵入したケースを39件確認したという。これは過去数年とほぼ同じ数である。
また、領海内で日本漁船に接近しようとしたケースは18件で、2021年に記録した過去最多に並んだという。
日本は尖閣諸島を支配している。中国と台湾は領有権を主張している。日本政府は、歴史的にも国際法上も、尖閣諸島は日本固有の領土であると主張している。解決すべき主権問題は存在しないという。
海上保安庁の坂本誠四郎海上保安部長は、事態は依然として深刻であるとしながらも、日本の領土と領海をしっかりと守るという方針の下、監視と警戒を強化し、いかなるわずかな変化も見逃さないことを誓った。
