FBI explores terrorism link to New Orleans truck attack
At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured after a man drove a truck into a crowd in the main tourist district of New Orleans, Louisiana, early Wednesday.
水曜日未明、ルイジアナ州ニューオーリンズの主要観光地区で、男がトラックで群衆に突っ込み、少なくとも10人が死亡、数十人が負傷した。
The incident occurred in the popular French Quarter shortly after 3 a.m. The area was crowded with people celebrating New Year’s. Some 300 police officers were deployed for the night.
The FBI says the driver and police later exchanged fire, and that he died on the spot.
It identified him as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, from Texas and said that what appear to be improvised explosive devices were found in the suspect’s vehicle and the French Quarter.
As a flag of the Islamic State group was found in the vehicle, the FBI said it is working to determine the suspect’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.
It also said it is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.
US President Joe Biden on Wednesday said in a statement: “My heart goes out to the victims and their families. There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.”
US President-elect Donald Trump said on social media: “The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones.”
“The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”
