Number of Casualties in Gaza rising despite resumption of ceasefire talks
Dozens of casualties have been reported in the Gaza Strip just after ceasefire talks resumed between Israel and Hamas.
イスラエルとハマスの停戦交渉が再開された直後から、ガザ地区で数十人の死傷者が報告されている。
The negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of hostages began on Friday in Qatar, a mediating country.
But a Palestinian media outlet said on Saturday that 41 people had been killed in Israeli airstrikes across Gaza since the early morning. Gaza’s health authority said the death toll has risen to 45,717.
Regarding the negotiations, an Israeli media outlet reported on Saturday that Israeli authorities have taken a cautious view on progress. It noted differences between the two sides on issues such as how to release the hostages held by Hamas.
Israel plans to put a new law into effect in late January to ban United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, from operating in the country. It accused some of the agency’s staff of taking part in the cross-border attacks by Hamas in October 2023.
UNRWA has been active in Gaza to provide humanitarian aid such as medical care and food. It said on social media on Saturday, “The clock is ticking for a possible ban on UNRWA to deliver essential services for millions of Palestine refugees.” It called on Israel to retract the law.
