We are pleased to welcome a new member to our team, Kelly Furukawa from Jamaica. “Welcome to our program, Kelly! We are very pleased to welcome Kelly Furukawa to our team.
Welcome to our show, Kerry!

As a matter of fact, Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, is only a two-hour flight away from Florida. In the studio, Kelly and I had a lot of fun talking about Jamaica and my home state of Florida.

She and the rest of the Jamaican people speak Jamaican English. The spelling of Jamaican English is often in line with British English, but the vocabulary is heavily influenced by American English.

By communicating with an awareness of accents and expressions used in the region or country you are visiting, you can experience a sense of belonging to that region. If you can sense the differences in the English spoken by new member Kelly, Nora from Ireland who has been with us until last month, and myself and Jenny, you will deepen your understanding of the diversity of the English language.

There are many countries in the world where English is the mother tongue or official language. We hope that through this program, you will have the opportunity to experience English in various countries and regions.

So, you now belong to our special learning community.
We have English speakers from all over the world…including YOU!

This month, we will be participating in local volunteer activities during the Christmas season when the Caribbean festival of John Canoeing takes place. What is your impression of Jamaican English as spoken by Kelly? Please not only listen carefully, but also try to answer the questions in your own way. There is a very local and Jamaican atmosphere when you are in conversation with Kelly!
