AI-powered robot developed in Japan offers advice based on Buddhist teachings

A group of researchers in Japan has unveiled to the media a humanoid robot that can offer advice based on Buddhist teachings.
The researchers, including Professor Kumagai Seiji of Kyoto University’s Institute for the Future of Human Society, developed the roughly 1.3-meter tall robot. It is equipped with artificial intelligence that they trained on Buddhist scriptures.
When an NHK reporter asked for advice on how to tackle her problem of thinking and worrying too much, the robot said Buddhism teaches that it is important not to follow one’s thoughts blindly. It added that trying to let go of the thoughts themselves can be one approach.
The robot then pressed its palms together in a gesture of prayer. It is also capable of walking. The researchers say that making it humanoid has enabled more fulfilling and engaging dialogue.
Kumagai is also a Buddhist priest. He said he wants to further develop the technology while discussing how it can be used from an ethical standpoint as well.

京都大学「人と社会の未来研究院」の熊谷誠司教授を含む研究者たちは、高さ約1.3メートルのロボットを開発しました。このロボットには、仏教の経典をもとに学習させた人工知能が搭載されています。
