Canadian Prime Minister Carney seeks to navigate a new world order with Japan

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says the world is “more divided,” and “more dangerous.” But he wants to ensure his country can still prosper. He believes likeminded “middle powers” including Japan have much to gain by strengthening ties.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is putting his country’s dependence on the United States under review. After all, President Donald Trump’s policy of putting “America First” has seen ties between the neighboring countries take a turn for the worse.
“You have rules, and then the other side decides not to follow those agreements,” said Carney during an interview with NHK on Saturday in Tokyo. “You have to adjust.”
And Carney believes Canada is not the only country that needs to adjust. At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he called for more unity among the world’s so-called middle powers ― defined as nations below those with a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, but still possessing extensive “clout”, Canada included.
He warned of a fading rules-based order: a world where the strong can do what they want, and the weak must suffer. The speech earned Carney a standing ovation.
