BBC apologizes to Trump for speech edit, but rejects compensation claim

Britain’s public broadcaster has apologized to US President Donald Trump for the editing of his speech in a documentary aired last year, but rejected his demand for compensation.
A British newspaper reported that parts of the speech were spliced together to make it appear that Trump had called for the Capitol Hill riots in January 2021.
On Sunday, the BBC announced the resignation of its director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness. BBC Chair Samir Shah also apologized for an “error of judgement” on Monday.
Trump’s lawyers demanded the retraction of the program, an apology and compensation. They threatened to sue the broadcaster for at least 1 billion dollars if the demands were not met.
On Thursday, the BBC issued a statement saying it had sent a letter to Trump’s legal team that apologized for the edit. It also said the documentary would not be broadcast again.
But the BBC added, “We strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim.”

英国の公共放送局BBCは、昨年放送されたドキュメンタリー番組でトランプ米大統領（当時）の演説を編集したことについて謝罪しましたが、賠償の要求は拒否しました。
英国の新聞は、演説の一部がつなぎ合わせられ、2021年1月の連邦議会議事堂（キャピトルヒル）での暴動をトランプ氏が呼びかけたように見える内容になっていたと報じました。
日曜日、BBCはティム・デイビー総裁と報道部長デボラ・ターネスの辞任を発表しました。BBCのサミアー・シャー会長も月曜日に「判断ミス」だったと謝罪しました。
トランプ氏の弁護士団は、番組の撤回、謝罪、そして賠償を要求しました。応じなければ少なくとも10億ドルで放送局を提訴すると警告しました。
木曜日、BBCは声明を発表し、トランプ氏の法務チームへ編集を謝罪する書簡を送ったと明らかにしました。また、問題のドキュメンタリーは再放送しないとも述べました。
